The area is an important stop over for migrating shorebirds. Every summer, massive flocks of shorebirds stop at near by Johnsons Mills to feed on the nutrient rich mudflats. As these tiny birds make their way from the Canadian arctic to their South American winter home, the Bay of Fundys mudflats become a critical source of food. Over two million shorebirds pause to feed here, including up to 80 percent of the world population of Semipalmated Sandpipers. This is the birds last refuelling stop before flying 4,300 kilometres non-stop over the ocean to South America. This breathtaking spectacle attracts birdwatchers from around the world.
