Mobile Homes
In 2000, there were 8.6 million inhabited mobile homes in the United States. Certain states, primarily in the Sun Belt, where climate is milder and land-costs are in many cases less expensive, possessed the bulk of mobile homes.
States with the highest percentages of mobile homes included New Mexico, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, the Carolinas and West Virginia-mobile homes constituted between 14.9 and 20.3 percent of all residences. Largely rural states or states with low land-costs, scattered about the country, were next in line with between 11 and 14.3 percent of residences being mobile homes: Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Montana and Idaho were some of these.
States with less than 3.2 percent of all residences as mobile homes included highly industrialized and affluent states with large urban populations in cooler climates, including New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, New Jersey and Maryland.
