Forest - Natural
According to a report by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, global forests cover about 1,000 million hectares of the earth's surface. About half of these forests are in the lowest latitudes, in the tropical zone, on either side of the equator. Another third or so are in the boreal zone between 50 and 75 degrees North and South.
Scientists now believe that forest cover plays a role in the management of global climate-but to what extent, and how exactly, is a source of continued discussion. The world's forests contain 55 percent of the global carbon stored in vegetation, and more than 45 percent of that in the soil. To what extent vegetation absorbs carbons from the atmosphere, and how fast is a matter of debate.
Continued deforestation does occur as logging continues apace throughout the world on every continent where forests are found. Environmentally questionable logging practices continue to bedevil many developing countries, such as Brazil and Indonesia, which need to export as much of their resources as possible to stoke their economies.
In the U.S., the Bureau of Land Management coordinates logging leases on many public lands; there is continuous debate over the extent to which logging should take place within the National Forest system, which is run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
