Permanent Crops
Permanent croplands are lands used for crops occupying the land for a long period of time and which do not have to be planted for several years after each harvest. Land under trees and shrubs producing flowers, such as roses and jasmine, is so classified, as are nurseries (except those for forest trees, which should be classified under "forests and other wooded land"). Permanent meadows and pastures are excluded, according to European Commission's Communication and International Resource Center.
Typical crops include: cocoa, coffee and rubber, as well as land under flowering shrubs, fruit trees, nut trees and vines.
Just 25 countries worldwide devote more than 10 percent of their land to permanent crops, with island nations like the Marshalls, Tonga and Kiribati at the top of the list, according to GeographyIQ.com.
