Are We Getting Your Goat? Get it Yourself
Wondering about the next farming fad? If you're not already getting your neighbor's goat, you may end up getting your own.
Wire reports, including the Associated Press, say goat farming continues to grow, and 2005 simply proved the trend was more than a short-lived phenomenon: About 2-million goats are raised in United States for meat, but the domestic market could support a herd of 15-million animals, says a trade group, the American Meat Goat Association. The number of people raising goats jumped 19.5 percent between 1997 and 2002, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Top goat-producing states? Texas, and then Tennessee and California. California's goat herd grew to about 100,000 this year from about 61,000 in 2002, according to the USDA. The market is expected to continue growing. Demand for goat meat will increase 40 percent by 2007, Texas academic researchers say. Australia and New Zealand already export 18 million tons of goat meat to the U.S. annually. But with the Latin American, Caribbean and Muslim communities -- all favor goat - growing, demand will out-pace supply, experts say. Agriculture Round-up: Soybeans and Beef
Soybean rust is a serious problem for soybean farmers: the U.S. Department of Agriculture has set up a special website to cope with the problem - it's packed with information and advice. Meanwhile, cattle ranchers are preparing for the opening of Japanese markets to U.S. beef; what it does to prices is anybody's guess but as farm subsidies are likely to drop in coming years, agricultural interests in the U.S. continue to push for open markets around the world...stay tuned by tuning into the U.S. Foreign Agricultural Service. Deforestation and global warming are getting attention again, this time in California. Forest landowners can earn carbon-producing credits by keeping some land in forest. Two examples are the Garcia River Forest in Sonoma County and the Van Eck property in Humboldt. These properties are now registered with the Climate Action Registry .
The projects will reduce greenhouse gases, restore streams and roads, all while working to produce timber. The Conservation Fund, the Pacific Forest Trust, the Nature Conservancy and the California State Coastal Conservancy, will actually manage logging on these lands to save them and better the environment. To earn a "carbon credit,' forest landowners must show that they remove more carbon from the atmosphere than they would under business as usual. And one key way to earn credits is by committing to keep the land in forest use, instead of converting to asphalt and shopping malls. Finally...You've Got Pix!
