Forest Round-Up
Major woodlands sales proposed by both the U.S. Government and private enterprise are keeping the forestry grapevine humming. The Bush Administration has proposed that the Forest Service shed just over 300,000 acres in 34 states; the service says they are non-critical parcels difficult to maintain. Environmentalists warn the system is being eroded through such sales. Separately, fishing magazine Fly Rod & Reel comments that road building by the Forest Service has degraded key fishing habitat.
Private sector-wise: a Weyerhaeuser subsidiary and a timber investment fund are selling 165,000 acres of plantation forests in the Nelson/Marlborough region of New Zealand, and the Kaituna sawmill at Renwick, NZ.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Forum on Forests will meet for two weeks to discuss international arrangements to control deforestation, promote sustainable forest management and acknowledge the ways that forests play a key part in economic development. Given the impact on forests of population expansion, economic growth and environmental instability, it is not surprising (forest issues) have been at the center of several international negotiations, the undersecretary general for economic and social affairs, said at the forum.
Noting that the global trade in primary and secondary forest products takes in some $200 billion annually, he said, ``Sustainable forest management has become a major policy objective for many countries." 3rd World Factory Farming Problematic, Group Asserts
A Canadian-based organization blames factory poultry farming for the spread of Avian Influenza. The report by the Montreal, Quebec group, Grain, says wild birds and backyard flocks are not the spreading the disease, but third-world factory farming of poultry creates ideal conditions for incubating so-called bird-flu.
Air thick with viral load from infected farms was carried for kilometers, in a study of Thai factory farms, while integrated trade networks spread the disease through many carriers: live birds, day-old chicks, meat, feathers, hatching eggs, eggs, chicken manure and animal feed, Grain says. They note that the lack of bio-diversity among poultry breeds in factory farms creates conditions ripe for viral spread.
Meanwhile, bird flu has been identified in Russia, and at a poultry facility in Nigeria. And, in an unrelated development, on the Delmarva Peninsula, on the U.S. East Coast, birds are being vaccinated against a respiratory illness that is not spread to humans, but is lethal to poultry if not contained. Vineyard developers are snapping up land for use in growing grapes for use in making Pinot Noir, now more popular because of 2004's "Sideways" film; demand for California wine has only grown in recent years and land is scare in traditional wine-growing regions of the state, the Associated Press has reported.
Sonoma is just one of several Northern California counties trying to balance the interests of the wine industry and the environment. The latest battlefront is this sparsely populated region where a cool climate and sandy soil offer ideal conditions to grow the delicate, thin-skinned pinot noir grape. After vintners declared northwest Sonoma County the "new terroir" for pinot noir in the late 1990s, developers began buying up land and planting vines.
A proposed ordinance would ban replacement of old-growth forests, such as redwoods, with vineyards. Hungary Expands Forested Lands for EU Pact
U.S.-based Planktos, Inc. formed a joint venture with Klimafa, Inc., a carbon forestry firm, that is in the process of working with Hungary's government to turn large tracts of degraded land and retired pasturage into protected mixed growth woodlands. Planktos, is a a wholly owned subsidiary of Solar Energy Limited (OTCBB:SLRE). Eighty-five percent of Hungary was once crowned with old growth forests of oak, beech and poplar, but today less than 17% of wooded land remains. Most native forest was sacrificed to farming, but the terms of Hungary's recent entry into the European Union now stipulate the permanent retirement of nearly one million hectares of agricultural land, in part to meet greenhouse gas mitigation requirements for the continent.
