RPB Round-Up: Back to the Future!

Many of you have been asking us about our monthly magazine, Rural Property Bulletin, which joined our family of rural real estate media properties this past fall. We have a few news-bits to offer you.

First, not only can display advertisers in RPB now expect to see their display ads online at LandAndFarm.com -- we're also finalizing some tech-work to make them keyword-searchable too. (You can also e-mail the online link to that ad, as well). Print display ads that reside online are tagged with state/province designations and "land uses," just like online-orginated ads. So, look for those thumbnails of RPB display ads online!

Second, you spoke...and we listened: RPB will return to alphabetized-by-state listings early in 2005. Regionalized listings were an experiment -- and our lab-testing is now complete. Back to the future!

Finally, we've begun including more editorial content in the magazine as a way to bring even more eyeballs to your ads. For example, our January issue (on newsstands and in your mailbox as early as Dec. 31, allowing for the holidays...) features a primer on timber investing, winter weather temperature and precipitation forecasts -- along with relevant maps, a profile of Francis Marion National Forest (SC), information about federal dollars available to your farm or ranch for conservation easements, and much more!

You can buy a sample copy for $3.65, which is the newsstand price. Or, you can subscribe, which of course, you can now do online! Click here to subscribe or order your sample copy, today! Or, send us an email at info@ruralproperty.net

Supersize Pix

You like to upload some incredible land and farm snapshots to this website: iIncredible in beauty...and incredible in size! So we've responded by increasing the upper-limit on photo size from 100K to 250K. It's always been said that disk storage-space gets cheaper by the month, but we continue to try to make our site load fast and easily. As bandwidth increases, and our back-end gets snazzier, we expect this increase in photo size -- for those who take advantage of it -- to have a negligible impact on the overall loading of the site to your screen. And, you get to see some really incredible -- in both looks and girth -- pictures, too.

That's why when you ask for bigger pictures, we just say, "let's go ahead and supersize pix."

Picture Your Sale

Photos are so important for your ad. They highlight your property's best features and show the context within which the property sits: a mountain range, surrounded by water or a forest, or perhaps surrounded by fields or even desert. Whatever the location, a photo gives prospective buyers a true sense of the property. And that's why we're now supporting uploads of multiple file types! In the past, we've allowed uploads of .JPG's -- that trusty format used by people hunting for houses, husbands and everything in between! Now you can upload .GIF, .BMP., .TIF, .PNG formats, as well.

The formats and what they mean:

JPEG - The most common image formats. It's primarily used for photographs. You can adjust the amount of compression when saving a jpeg image, so you do have some control over the final output quality. JPEGs are extremely popular since they compress into a small file size and retain excellent image quality. Keep in mind that the more you compress a JPEG, the more pixely it will tend to look. For the best results, save your JPEGs at the medium or High setting (your imaging software should bring up this option when you go to save as a JPEG). We really can''t see any image degradation in most pictures saved at the medium setting. On your computer, the file-name extension is: .jpg.

GIF - Another popular format, especially on the web. GIFs can be either static or animated. If you've ever seen a graphic on a web page that was animated, you've seen one of these animated gifs. Most of the time GIFs are used for non-photographic type images. Buttons, borders, stuff like that. File-name extension: .gif.

PNG - A substitute for GIF that evolved when a patent issue prevented folks from using GIFs (now resolved.). File-name extension: .png.

BMP- This is the standard Windows image format. It's an uncompressed file format, so it takes up lots of disk space. It's also the standard format for Windows wallpaper. File-name extension: .bmp.

TIFF- The choice of graphics professionals. It won't result in as small a file as a jpeg (which is why it's not used on the web), but you do retain all image quality. When compressed, the file is usually about half the size of the original file. File-name extension: .tif.

Santa Visits Our Advertisers...

Our Christmas in July promotion, known as 'Value Ads,' proved so popular, we continued them right through the fall and into early winter! This low-priced, no-photos ad was very popular with new customers. Alas, all good things must come to an end, and this promotion ends as of Dec. 31. And while our Standard and Premium Ads cost more -- you get lots for your bucks: 16 photos for each property displayed online and in searches, integration with GoogletmAdwords for narrow-casting your ad to the right parties and loads more features, too numerous to mention.

Don't forget...if you're a display advertiser in Rural Property Bulletin, you now get your print display ad image uploaded to LandAndFarm.com, so it's available online as well. This happens auto-magically back at our offices; all you have to do is watch for it! Best of all -- you don't have to wait for the first of the month to see the display ad in RPB; once we get it, it goes online, easily...and best of all, early.

Our holiday gift to you...our customers.

Cozy North Country Retreat Weathers Lakeshore Well

by David Saltman

Along the stark and beautiful shores of windswept Lake Ontario, a solid stone house sits welcoming visitors, not 40 feet from the easternmost Great Lake. It overlooks one of the largest bodies of freshwater in the world; nearby the waters make their way into the island-strewn St. Lawrence River for their journey to the sea, guided by the 150-year old Tibbets Point Lighthouse.

It's a charming New York North Country setting, not lost on its owners. [...click here to continue]
