Note 3-In the figures above, no annual growth factor has been included.
A conservative growth rate for Northern Ontario would range from 0.25 to 0.40 cords per acre per year.

Note 4-The purpose of the site visits was to obtain an overall inventory of timber with some indication of what proportion of all timber present was merchantable. Timber product specifications used to determine whether a tree was tallied were generic. The cruising crew has 30 years of experience in identifying a merchantable tree on the stump. Trees with four (4) inch diameter or greater at breast height were tallied.

This private forest management plan encompasses the entire land-base of Running Township, which is located in the District of Algoma, on the Eastern side of Lake Superior, (27 km) East of Highway 17, between Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa.

Running Township is bordered by McParland Township to the North and the Southern portion of McParland Township from the Running Township boundary to the Montreal River. On all other sides, Running Township is bordered by crown land.

The Township of Running is fully accessible by road and is approximately a 2-hour drive from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. To access this township, follow Hwy 17 North of Sault Ste. Marie to Heyden and turn onto Hwy 556. This highway is followed to Hwy 532 and then to the town of Searchmont where travelers turn onto the Whitman Dam Road. The Whitman Dam Road is travelled 50 km to the intersection of the Domtar Road. One must travel northwest on the Domtar Road from km 56 to km 65. Travelers then continue on the Ranger Northwest Road for 6 km to the Way-White Road for 6 km, and then finally on the Running Road for 9 km to reach the Running Camp.

Running Township harvesting began during the spring of 2003. At this time, road building was occurring as harvesting took place. A portion of the Southern section was harvested first with the road crew, harvesting team and supervisors commuting from the camp at Mekatina (mile 63 on the Algoma Central Railway). In the summer of 2004, a permanent cookery/bunkhouse and cabins were constructed near km 9 on the Running Road. In compilation with many sleep trailers, this is known as the Running Camp, which houses up to 30 forestry workers during the summer season.

The leasing of small acreages for the building of recreational camps has occurred in the township. Of current camp leases, the first was established in 1980. There are 14 leased areas in the township. Each lease is a yearly lease consisting of 1 acre of land. The lease contract states that the lessee is to use the land only for the purpose of constructing, maintaining and occupying a single private dwelling used seasonally for recreational purposes only.

The majority of the harvested sites are regenerated naturally, but some hand planting has occurred on suitable sites within the township. In May 2004, employees first conducted tree planting, totaling 115,300 seedlings, consisting or White Pine, Black Spruce and Jack Pine.

The rugged forested landscape of Running Township is traversed by several creek and river systems. The main waterway passing through this township is the Batchewana River, which flows from the NE to the SW and discharges into Lake Superior. The Vacher Creek, Dixon Creek, Alder Creek and the Quinn River flow within the township and drain the Batchewana River. The township also possesses many ponds and small lakes including Pan Lake, Rotunda Lake and St. Clair Lake.

Wilderness tourism is a part of the local economy and exists in various levels in the area surrounding Running Township. Caribou Expeditions operates from Goulais River, and provides guided paddling adventures on local waterways. The Batchewana River is an option for clients where paddling could involve a section through Running Township. Guided bear hunting expeditions are offered in the area and in the past have occurred in Way-White Township. Fly-in fishing is also available in the surrounding area. The company maintains fishing camps located on Roderic, Gould, Dave, Fulcher, Mank, Tikamaganda, and Gord Lakes.

Hunters are abundant in the area especially during moose season. During the summer months it is common to see people camping along waterways, canoeing, fishing and picking berries on land surrounding Running Township. There is also a groomed snowmobile trail which crosses the Domtar Road at km 57 and runs up the Ranger Northwest Road during the winter.

The main long-term objective for Running Township is the view as an asset investment in accompaniment with annual timber harvest.
