King-Casper-Ward-Bazemore House
The King-Casper-Ward-Bazemore House a beautiful one of a kind historic home. The main home is a two-story, three-bay frame house constructed in the Federal period with a classic hall-and-parlor plan. Originally located in Bertie County, it is believed to have been built in 1805 by Henry Slade King. It was purchased by Thomas Casper in 1810 and remained in that family until 1886 when it was sold to Littleton Ward. In 1934 it was sold at auction and two days later it was purchased by Hattie Bazemore. Milton Ward purchased the house in 1977 and deeded it to Historic Hope Foundation in 1980 with the stipulation that it was to be sold and moved. The present owners moved it to a rural site in Hertford County thirty years ago, carefully restored the original house and made sensitive additions to the structure.
Although the house passed through a long list...
Although the house passed through a long list of early Bertie County families, the National Register property is significant for its architectural details and its association with a family of carpenters and builders working in Bertie County in the antebellum period. From the vernacular scalloped porch trim and fretwork to the elegant tapered sawn porch post the exterior of the house is intact. Except for three original mantels the interior is intact with original six panel doors, several with original hardware to the finely molded and reeded woodwork. Once relocated the two exterior gable end chimneys were rebuilt, the rear shed rooms were raised to the second floor to accommodate baths and closets and a master bedroom wing was added. More recently, a spacious addition to the rear of the house was framed in (making the square footage approximately 3,205). This space includes the kitchen and has not been finished. Surrounded by mature landscaping on a lot of 1.88 acres, the site includes a barn/garage and playhouse. Today, over 200 years after its construction and following its relocation the King-Casper-Ward-Bazemore House still embodies the distinct characteristics of a prosperous plantation dwelling.
