THE OLD QUARRY:
The Double D Ranch has its own Granite Quarry. Originally mined in the early 1900s, evidence of true Texas History can be found here. Granite from all over the Texas Hill Country was used to build historic buildings in Texas such as the State Capitol Building in Austin, Texas. There is only a mound remaining where the train tracks use to run from the quarry in to town. Granite markers can be found next to the pit where the rail cars were stopped and filled with huge chunks of granite to be shipped around the country. There is a concrete platform where the cranes were mounted to load the granite onto the rail cars.
Today, the old quarry holds about 20 feet of water. It is stocked with catfish for fishing! Excess chunks of granite were used to build the massive fence along Hwy 71 and the entry into this fabulous ranch.
