Francis Cowherd was an early settler in Orange County and bought land from James Madison, Sr. on which he built several homes for himself and his family. He was known as Major Cowherd and was a devoted soldier in the Revolutionary War. Coming down through his family, Cowherd Mtn. Farm is the last remaining tract of land bought from the Madison family. Here, fertile red soil and quintessential rolling Piedmont terrain rising to the crest of Cowherd mountain can be found. Springs and streams abound and leave mature hardwood forest on the mountain falling to the lower elevations of deep pasture.
The old farmhouse dates to the early 20th century and has received careful attention over the last decade including new A/C, new vinyl windows, new baths and kitchen. There are three bedrooms and two full baths with living room, dining room in addition to the large eat-in kitchen.
