ABOUT THE OUTSTANDING PERMACULTURE GARDENS
The new owner of this farm will inherit not just a mature fruit and nut orchard but also an incredibly fertile garden filled with beds that can produce any crop in abundance that can thrive in a hardiness zone of 6b.
The farm produces an incredible variety of livestock, fruit, and vegetables, and herbs. The garden alone perennially grows eighteen different species of fruit, two types of nuts, and dozens of kinds of annual vegetables. The farm produces its own meat, milk, butter, cheese, and eggs. The farm raises Angus cattle for beef, Jersey cows for milk and butter, and a mix of chickens for eggs and meat. Meat chickens are raised in a secure brooder and a large, fenced space above the orchard. The layer chickens are rotated through the vegetable garden and orchard in chicken tractors and help reduce pests and till the garden beds.
The main barn features a clean room with fridges and freezers to process and store milk products. The cattle and horses are moved around the farm using rotational grazing methods that reduce the impacts the livestock have on the pastures, maximize the available forage, and allows each pasture to rest and regrow in between each grazing cycle. Frost free hydrants are installed conveniently all over the gardens and the barn yard to supply fresh water. A newly installed water system delivers water to livestock troughs in the remote pastures.
The farm gardens are a master class in permaculture and sustainable food growth. Composted poultry litter, grass clippings, shredded leaves, and horse manure are all used to enhance soil fertility and build a beautiful organic layer that nurtures the food plots but also creates a natural weed barrier. The gardens are kept all natural and no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used. Low and no-till strategies keep the soil layers intact and healthy, reduce light exposure to unwanted weed seeds, and minimize erosion. The vegetable crops are rotated through the beds to reduce the impact of high yield crops and maximize the banked nutrients in each bed. The fruit bushes and tree crops are meticulously cultivated throughout the year and are kept weed free using various strategies including the use of chopped mulch and stall litter as well as different mint species to create a weed impenetrable ground cover under the fruit trees. The main garden and the orchard are surrounded by an extra high woven wire fence to exclude not just the cattle but also deer.
The gardens produce at least eighteen species of perennial fruit including: strawberries, blueberries, thornless black berries, three types of raspberries, mulberries, apricots, peaches, nectarines, cherries, twenty-six grape vines, and elderberries. Other perennial crops include: asparagus, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, rhubarb, and host of preservable herbs including mints and sage.
The family also plants dozens of annual vegetable crops that thrive in the wonderfully cultivated soil including: various tomato and pepper species, cabbages, broccoli, other brassicas and salad greens, cucumbers, sweet corn, and a variety of other starchy vegetables.
