Holden Ranch is conveniently located twelve miles west of Columbus, Montana at exit 396 on Interstate 90. The small town of Reed Point is just four miles west and Billings, the largest city in Montana with all the conveniences of a much larger city, is located less than an hours drive to the east. Columbus is a full service community of approximately 1900 people, and is situated on the north bank of the Yellowstone River. It is the county seat of Stillwater County and is a fishermans paradise. Columbus also serves as a gateway to the Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains and Yellowstone National Park. The community has a golf course, swimming pool, hospital, airport, library, museum and a very good school system.
Improvements:
As you exit Interstate 94 the first thing that catches your eye is a red barn with Holden Ranch on the roof, which over the years has become an area land mark. Once past the barn you drive into a beautifully landscaped and manicured yard that surrounds a two story, four bedroom ranch home. There is an extensive set of corrals nearby, a 32 by 98 foot calving barn, several other outbuildings, three wells, water pipeline to the winter pasture and numerous developed springs with tanks throughout the ranch. The perimeter and cross fences are well built and in very good condition.
General Operation:
Holden Ranch has been operated as a purebred Red Angus operation. Scott and Karlee Holden traditionally run approximately 100 cows plus replacement heifers. They normally take in about 180 pairs from a neighbor in mid to late summer, which are then wintered on the ranch as well. The Holdens have traditionally consigned several of their Red Angus bulls to Midland Bull Test and have produced the test winner on more than one occasion. They have also been on the leading edge of the feed efficiency movement, and are recognized as one of the elite Red Angus cow herds to be found anywhere. Hay production is from dryland fields so yields will vary from year to year.
Other:
The variation in terrain on Holden Ranch is simply amazing. As you leave the headquarters and drive through near by hay fields, you have no idea of the beauty that is soon to open up before your eyes. The main drainage through the Ranch is Section House Creek which is a long deep canyon, with several developed springs for stock and wildlife water. Several other canyons and coulees feed into it, most of which contain developed springs with tanks. There are beautiful stands of pine trees, western cedar, cottonwoods, chokecherries and other shrubs along with wild flowers and strong stands of grass. As you get to the upper reaches of the ranch there are several large open benches with spectacular views of the Yellowstone Valley, the Crazy Mountains and Beartooth Mountains . Glacier Peak, the highest point in Montana is at an elevation of 12,807 feet, with 25 peaks in the Beartooths reaching over 12,000 feet. These mountain ranges include 300 pristine lakes, several permanent snow fields and glaciers.
