HISTORY:

The area was originally inhabited and traveled by Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) people, who used the Camas Prairie for seasonal hunting, gathering, and travel between river corridors. Euro-American settlers began arriving in the late 1800s, drawn by the rich agricultural potential of the Camas Prairie. The town of Cottonwood was established in the 1880s and named for the cottonwood trees that grew along local creeks and drainage areas.
