Meadow Wood was built 1885 by Frederick Hood for his bride of three years, Theo Harriett Beckham. Hood had emigrated from England just ten years before and found here the vibrant community of Frederick Hall in Louisa County. The Louisa Railroad had stimulated two hotels, a carriage manufacturer, a livestock market and a lively environs in which to get goods directly to larger markets of Richmond.

Hood elected to capture Victorian elements in his scalloped shingle cross-gable and in the bracketed deep eaves. The center hall plan provided the essential flow of summer breezes and visitors as he adapted to life in the South. Tall ceilings, heart pine floors, lovely scale and charming setting are still here today.
