Seminole is a city in and the county seat of Gaines County in west Texas, United States. The population was 6,430 at the 2010 census. It is the birthplace of country music singers Larry Gatlin and Tanya Tucker. . Paul Patterson, the western, author and educator and mentor of Elmer Kelton, was born in Gaines County.Seminole, Located in the northern part of the oil-rich Permian Basin and on the southern edge of the agricultural South Plains of Texas. The economy is primarily dependent on oil production and agriculture. Gaines County has ranked among the top two counties in the state in both oil and cotton production for many years. In addition to a strong agriculture and oil economy, Gaines County enjoys a low crime rate, low unemployment rate, favorable climate, and easy access to the mountains of New Mexico, the sandhills of West Texas, and the rugged wilderness of the Big Bend area. Gaines County is Widely Known to Produce Some of the Biggest Mule Deer in the State of Texas Year after Year.

In its second nine-day muley season since being reopened to hunting, Gaines again proved to be the epicenter for big muleys in this part of the world. Last season was one for the record books as the county produced three non-typical mule deer bucks that netted more than 200 Boone & Crockett points, the largest being a buck harvested by Danny Young that grossed 230 and netted 2193/8.

It's tough to top a year like that, but Gaines produced another pair of huge non-typical muley bucks this past season, the largest taken by Steven Trammell grossing 198 5/8 and netting 195 5/8 B&C. The other bruiser, harvested by Kurt Davis, grossed 193 and netted 188 6/8.

Gaines also produced a pair of massive typical muleys, which will rank fourth and fifth all-time in the Texas Big Game Awards for typical bucks when the official results are released. The larger buck, taken by Rick Meritt, grossed 212 5/8 and netted 190 5/8. The other buck, harvested by Steven Hatchett, grossed 204 4/8 and netted 189 1/8. The first Texas buck to qualify for Boone and Crockett Club's all-time records was taken in Potter County in 1996 by Mickey Van Huss. The 11-pointer scored 196 5/8 and remains the state record, though reports of a huge Gaines County buck from this season could change all that. Three other B&C-quality mule deer have been entered in TBGA. Gaines County, on the New Mexico border southwest of Lubbock, is creating the latest buzz. This is the second year for the agriculture county to have a mule deer season, and local game warden Shaun Bayless said the deer are as old and as big as they can get. Bayless checked several tremendous Gaines County bucks during the nine-day season. With a gross score of 220, one is a contender to be the state-record typical. Bayless said the oldest bucks are 10 years old and the heaviest weigh more than 300 pounds.

"This is just the second year we've had a season in Gaines County, and the landowners are getting a lot of money for these big bucks," Bayless said. "I'm concerned they could be overhunted pretty easily."
