The magnificent historical rock home was built by Henry Mills Sr. in 1924. Using rock off of the ranch, hauled in wagons from the bluffs on Howard draw, the home still stands strong and prestigious as in it's early days. The thick walls and ceilings are made of rock and plaster. The large living room and dining area have hardwood floors. They still shine and look as good as they did the day they were laid. The old two story home consists of 8 bedrooms and 2 baths. The first floor of the house has central air conditioning and butane heat.
In the early days Mr. and Mrs. Mills saw a need for a mercantile store and Post Office to serve the Pandale community. The Mills family promptly built the concrete store a short distance from the family home in 1928. Mrs Mills was appointed Postmistress and ran the Post Office. The store and Post Office remained in operation until 1975. In later years after the store closed a fire consumed the stores roof, however the walls and floor are still intact.
The ranch mainly stocked sheep and goats. Close to the main house is a set of working livestock pens, laborers house, two barns and a saddle house. One barn is of concrete walls and floor with a metal roof. The other barn is of metal construction with a concrete floor.
1. THE PECOS RIVER
The picturesque Pecos River divides the ranch. 3,500+- acres lay along the east side and +- 4,400 acres border the west side of the river. The ranch has +- 5 miles of Pecos river frontage. +-3.2 miles of the river has one side owned while the remaining +-1.8 miles frontage is solely owned by the Mills Ranch, both sides of the river. The river is rock,and gravel bottom. The panoramic views of the river are to breath taking to describe. Access to the river is numerous and can be easily driven in a truck. There are several river fords and roads along the river. New roads could be easily built along most of the river bottom.
2. WATER
Water for the headquarters is provided by 2 wells. One is a submersible pump in the back yard of the main house. It is housed in a nice rock pump house matching the main house.
The other well is a windmill right over the fence on the neighbor with water rights granted to the Mills Ranch. The rights are guaranteed by written document.
Along with the river, water for the ranch is also provided by two more wells. One is a submersible pump and the other is a windmill, a total of 4 wells. There are two concrete storage tanks and numerous concrete water troughs.
3. TELEPHONE
Telephone service is provided by Big Bend Telephone Co. with fiber optics on sight. Labor quarters also has telephone service.
4.INDIAN ARTIFACTS
Century's ago we know Indians habituated the Pecos River area and the Mills Ranch shows proof of that. Numerous old Indian mounds and caves are located throughout the ranch. Endless artifact hunting can be an enjoyment and entertaining for the whole family and friends. The caves on the ranch are also an exploring adventure.
5.HUNTING
The Mills ranch had the same small group of hunters for many years. The lease is on a year to year basis. Game trails are numerous and very heavily used.
