This small Rocks AVA vineyard was named Broken Plow due to mechanical difficulty experienced ripping, preparing and planting the very rocky, cobble stone site.
Sitting at an elevation of approximately 1,000 feet Broken Plow, a 6th leaf vineyard, is planted with the very popular 337 Cabernet Sauvignon clone, in 9 X 5 spacing, with north-south vine orientation and vertical shoot positioning, on 2.0 +/- acres.
It may be small but this well managed vineyard, which is cropped at 3 - 4 +/- tons per acre, has been producing wonderful fruit bursting with recognized Rocks District terroir which is how a particular regions climate, soils and aspect affect flavors of the wine grapes.
Some regions are said to have more terroir than others and this little vineyard brings it.
Irrigation of Broken Plow is necessary with the cobble rock Freewater loam soils and is provided through certified water rights, dating back to 1872, from the Little Walla Walla River.
There is an additional .50 +/- acre of property not planted to vineyard.
This half acre contains a 1,525 +/- sq. ft. three bedroom, two bath, two story house, and a four overhead door 1,600 +/- sq. ft. shop, with a bathroom.
The City of Milton Freewater provides water and sewer services for the house and shop.
