Shelter Cove is a census-designated place on the coast of Humboldt County, California with a population was 693 as of the 2010 census. Shelter Cove is on California's Lost Coast where the King Range meets the Pacific Ocean at an elevation of 138 feet. A nine-hole golf course surrounds the one-runway Airport at the center of Shelter Cove's commercial district. Utilities are provided by the Humboldt County Resort Improvement District #1 and boating access to the sea is managed by the Humboldt Bay Harbor, Recreation & Conservation District. Shelter Cove shares the ZIP code 95589 with the hamlet of Whitethorn, California, located 13 miles to the southeast. Whitehorn offers public schools grades K-8 Whale Gulch High School grades 9-12.

The closest large town is Eureka about 85 miles north with a Walmart, Costco, pharmacies, Ace hardware, other supply stores a regional hospital and a municipal airport. The closest major cities with international airports are Sacramento CA and San Francisco which can be reached in is about a 4 hours and under 5 hours respectively.
