Imagine Morgan County in 1818, when pioneer John C Woods built his two story log home on property he received as a land grant for service in the American Revolutionary War. The land was close to Parks Mill on the river, near Seven Islands Road, a noted Indian Trail. When John married in 1840, the home was transformed configured as three rooms and a shotgun center hall on the main level, with the upstairs utilized as attic space. The smoke house was built soon after. Seven generations of the Woods family were raised in the home, but the home was eventually abandoned. The farm was purchased by local investors who enjoyed hunting on the property for many years. As Lake Oconee came to life, the 12 men of Vision pulled numbers out of a hat to determine which lake lot each would own.
In 1979, local publishers Graham and Adelaide Ponder had the home moved to their lake lot and restored under the direction of Atlanta architect Norman Askin. The kitchen was added, along with plumbing and bathrooms. The paneling for the master bathroom came from the walls of the original parlor, and the bath tub was a Ponder family heirloom dated to the 1700s. The upper story was removed and the hand hewn beams now appear in the lakeside parlor. Timbers for the great porch came from an outbuilding that originally housed the kitchen. The outdoor shower underneath the great porch was added for the convenience of swimmers. The Ponders also moved the original Smoke House to its current location, imaging a future conversion to a guest home. As one of the first developed lots on Lake Oconee, a wooden boathouse was permitted today there are fewer than 10 remaining on the lake, and the right will transfer to the new owner.
In 2005, the lifetime metal roof replaced aging cedar shakes, and an efficient heat pump was installed.
The 3.7 acre lot is exquisitely private mostly level, with a diverse hardwood forest covering most of the lot. Midway down the gravel drive youll encounter a wrought-iron gate that leads to the homestead. The perimeter fence may be useful for containing your pets but its not deterred local deer from enjoying lake access! Landscaping touches are timeless a picket fence defines the home site, pathways are lined with flagstone, and a wooden footbridge leads to the dock. Much of the wood for the arbors and railings came from trees harvested on the land.
The lakefront is luxurious, about 370ft of private shoreline, with wooden seawall and max dock with wooden boathouse a rare privilege on Lake Oconee. Georgia Power representatives have advised that a double boathouse would be allowed, so bring all your water toys! The property is located on a deep water cove in a mid-lake location, with big open water just around the corner. The cove is a haven for birds and other wildlife.
