Positioned east of Surprise Valley on State Route 34, the Old Yella Dog Ranch is situated in Long Valley approximately 215 miles north of Reno, Nevada and 25 miles east of Cedarville, California. Surrounded by BLM and vacant land just north of Highway 8A East, the Old Yella Dog Ranch encompasses the history laden ghost town of Vya, Nevada and a portion of the historic Applegate-Lassen Emigrant Trail. The California border is 11.5 miles east, and the Oregon border is 35.2 miles north.

Air travel is available approximately 23.5 miles from the Ranch at a small municipal airport in Cedarville, California with a single paved runway. Domestic and international flights are available through commercial airlines at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

The United States Postal Service no longer delivers to Vya, Nevada, so mail is picked up at the Cedarville, California Post Office, about half hour from the Ranch. In Cedarville you will also find a gas station/convenience store, market, feed store, restaurant and hotel, among other small town amenities. Shopping and other services typically available in larger towns and cities are found 2.5 hours northwest in Klamath Falls or 3.75 hours south in Reno, Nevada.
