Nearby Ahoskie, is the largest community in Hertford County, is located in the northeastern part of North Carolina on the Pleasure Route, US Highway 13, and is 24 miles south of the Virginia line. The elevation is 60 feet above sea level while covering an area of 4.5 square miles or 2786 acres. Ahoskie enjoys a temperate climate with cold, but never severe, winters and moderately warm summers. As early as 1719 the town was known by the Indian name of Ahotskey, which was adopted by the white settlers. The English spelled the name in many ways after articulation of the unwritten Indian sound, and in 1894 with the coming of the railroad and the post office, the name was spelled Ahoskie. (
