The East Branch and the Middle Branch of the Escanaba converge in the town of Gwinn to form the main stem. The stretch from this convergence through the flatlands of Marquette County, to the Delta County line is mostly wide and smooth, ideal for canoe trips. From the Delta County line, the river runs south to its mouth on Lake Michigan. The Upper Escanaba River has three major dams: the Greenwood Dam, Schwietzer Dam, and the Cataract Dam. These impoundments support several warm water fish species. About a half mile distance down-river is the "Second City Falls", a Class IV Falls, which is supposed to be a bigger version of the first falls. Another half mile down-river are the "Island Ledges", a Class II Falls, where as the river encounters an island, it spills across a couple of ledges. A third of a mile further is the "Half-Dome Falls", a Class IV Falls. A large half-dome of rock creates a challenging hump to ride down. After crossing a nice pool, a line of rocks split into a number of pour-overs called "Granite Canyon", a Class IV Falls. Beyond this point, the river smooths out into a wider pool, then swift running water to the eastern end of the property. The river system provides a diverse habitat for birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, for hours of nature-wildlife viewing. Besides kayaking, swimming, and fishing, there are unlimited opportunities for hiking along the exposed rock escarpments, and rugged outcroppings of rock that hug parts of the river.
