Originally part of an 11,000-acre peninsula called Davis Bend, the land was purchased in 1818 by Joseph Emory Davis, who built the Hurricane Plantation there and later gave his younger brother, future Confederate President Jefferson Davis, an adjoining tract that became the Brierfield Plantation.
